Education

I think education as instruction involves both "teaching and learning". Education is the teaching and learning. If one of the two isn't present then I don't think education is happening. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe learning is all that is needed for education. Perhaps if someone is sitting down playing and learn something then they have been educated. I'm not sure though. I would just call that exploratory or experiential learning. I still feel both have to be their for education. If I teach and you learn, then education has occured.

  1. Ok, you brought up the L-word. Here's my question back to you.

Can there be learning without education?

For example, a baby who learns to roll over? Or walk? Can someone *learn* without being *taught*?

  2. In response to LOWELL. Can there be learning without education? Interesting. Perhaps somethings are "awakenings" as opposed to learning. Maybe we dont learn to roll over, we just awaken to an ability we have.

But, the argument goes further. Think back to before we knew all about geometry. It was found out by people. People who didnt learn it from others. They are discoveries or awakenings. I'm not sure if it is learning at all.

  3. "Awakening" ? Seriously?

Isn't "Learning" enough? If I go out to my yard and, through trial and error, learn how much water I need to put on my rose bushes to get them to blossom? You're suggesting that's "Awakening" to an ability I didn't have?
